Army Triathlon cyclistsATA MISSION

‘Our Mission is to attract, train and retain committed triathletes in order to: increase membership, training and competitor numbers year on year; dominate IS Triathlon and National Club Championships year on year; increase our representation at National civilian level from elite downwards; promote a positive image of the Army and Army Triathlon internally and externally; within resources.

Disciplines:

Triathlon comprises of a swim (in a swimming pool, lake or the sea), a cycle ride and a run. The three sports are contested as a continuous event without a rest. The triathlon can be an individual or team event.

Distances:

There are various race distances, a few are shown below:
• Super Sprint – 400m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run
• Sprint – 750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run
• Standard – 1.5km swim, 40km cycle, 10km run
• Half Ironman – 1.9km swim, 90km cycle, 21.1km run

Members:

We had 250 members in 2012, including officers and soldiers from the Regular and Territory Army, Phase 1 and 2 soldiers and Officer Training Corps cadets.

Season:

The season runs from about April to October; although, many people compete at Duathlons (run, cycle, run) during the ‘off season’.

History:

Triathlon began in North America in the 1970s, while the first race in the UK was held in 1983 in Reading. The ATA were formed in the mid-1980s. It took until 2000 for Triathlon to make its debut as an Olympic sport.

Army Triathlon womens teamTraining:

We have our own, in-house, experienced coaches, who provide training on a regular basis. The following training opportunities are provided every year:
• Three winter training camps between October and March.
• A Novice Training Camp, usually in April, aimed at anyone who has competed fewer than three triathlons.
• A warm weather training camp to Cyprus, in May.

Army Teams:

We have men’s’, women’s, veterans’ and mixed teams that compete at military and civilian events.
